I first met Cynthia when I responded to her job posting looking for a support person to help her with the day-to-day activities of her market research firm.. Of course, when I took the position I didn’t know Cynthia would be my mentor all these years later.. In fact, I get asked all the time by these ambitious young guns about being their mentor.. Hopefully, they one day can build successful and mutually beneficial relationships with industry pros as I have with my mentor, Cynthia, for 15+ years.. Tip #1: Show the person you hope to become your mentor that you’ll put in the work for them first.. I never asked Cynthia to be my mentor.. Our relationship continued to grow and over time, she put more energy into my professional development even though I never asked her to.. Tip #2: When you ask someone to “be your mentor,” it often comes with a stigma that the duty requires a lot of time and attention.. When you solicit advice on one particular thing you may be struggling with start small, as it is more manageable for your hopeful mentor to provide you with guidance in a quick conversation.. The relationship between a mentor and mentee is a two-way street.. You have asked someone to be your mentor and that person has refused to accept you as his mentee.. You have asked someone to be your mentor and he has accepted you for the position of his mentee.
