His repeated phrase “I am a star” conveys he's deluding himself in the hope of returning to the early heights of his success. Reuniting with Jack is a short-term solution and brings him back to where Dirk's drug addiction began.
Holmes, The Real Story. The homage is apparent in Dirk's first character being called John. Dirk's history as a Marine is based on Holmes' time in the Army. On the DVD commentary, Anderson explained that Amber Waves was based on Seka, who had a romantic relationship with Holmes.
Dirk Diggler, the film's protagonist, was actually directly inspired by famous porn actor John Holmes. Boogie Nights took cues from Holmes's life and career, along with certain aspects of Anderson's own life growing up in 1970s California.
Mark Wahlberg later regretted doing 'Boogie Nights'
Wahlberg eventually revealed that he regretted doing his breakthrough role as an adult due to shifting perspectives. In the movie, Wahlberg plays nightclub dishwasher turned porn star Eddie Adams.
John Holmes is the real life inspiration for Marky Mark's character Dirk Diggler in the Hollywood movie Boogie nights. John Holmes led a crazed and colourful life and left behind a large archive of his extraordinary activities, not least the 2,500 porn films he is credited on.
